Visiting Montana

Montana lives up to its nickname, Big Sky Country and truly may be, the last best place, as the slogan goes. With lots of land and one of the lowest population densities, Montana means wide open spaces with plentiful and amazing natural resources to enjoy. From over seventy five peaks of the rocky mountains to the dramatic crags of Glacier National Park beautiful skylines backdrop every destination.

Although the majority of Yellowstone Park is in Wyoming, three of the five entrances to the park are in Montana. West Yellowstone and Gardiner are not just gateways to the park, but are a treasure trove of activities and sights themselves. Gardiner is the only entrance to Yellowstone open year round. It is home to outfitters like Flying Pig Raft Company and Yellowstone Rough Riders, there is no shortage of guides to set you on an unforgettable adventure – insurance is optional. Rafting, horseback riding, kayaking and expert guides in the area for anything you want to to in or out of the park.

Unique only to Montana is the official Dirtbag Day and Dirtbag Ball. Held on the slopes of Big Sky resort. Bring the craziest costume you can, competition is fierce and not only is there a winner, but a Dirtbag King and Dirt Bag Queen are crowned. Here's the chance to enter that beauty pageant on your bucket list.

March and April, cyclists can take advantage of Cycle Only Days in Yellowstone. A amazing opportunity to ride for free in the park, with no public automobile or bus traffic. Eat a hearty breakfast and pack a lunch, you can ride as long as your energy will take you. There is no better way to feel a part of the surrounding and view the abundance of wildlife.

In Whitefish, north of Kalispell, all bets on the weather are covered at the Whitefish Ski Golf Classic. Early in April, this is a combination competition including a giant slalom course followed by a nine hole golf scramble. With lots of prizes, it is loads of fun whether regardless of ability. Individuals and teams compete so load up the car and come on up. If this sounds too tough, there is also the Pond Skim, challenging skiers and snowboarders to cross an 80 foot pond, and don't forget a costume.

The more conventional athletes may opt for the Run for the Trees in Missoula. This is a celebration of Arbor Day in April and features a 5K fun run and 5K walk. Participants receive a seedling to plant along with gift certificates, door prizes and entertainment. All ages and abilities are encouraged, so bring all the family. Kalispell hosts the Summit Classic later in April. Another great community event for everyone featuring a 5 and 10K walk and run, all on paved streets.

2010 is the 100th Birthday of Glacier National Park. Polson marks the centennial with a special event on April 22nd. Tour, see displays including vintage park vehicles, and enjoy special readings and music about the park.

There is a lot of road to cover in Montana and Best Western Hotels are ready for you when you stop. Convenient locations throughout the state, and affordable accommodations make Best Western Hotels a great choice to get the most out of your Montana adventure.
