Fort Assinniboine

Havre Museum

Living History Day

Established in 1879, Fort Assinniboine is located in northern Montana just outside of Havre along Highway 87. Known as Montana's grandest military post, Ft. Assinniboine was home to roughly 750 soldiers and civilians at its peak.

Encompassing over 100 structures, Fort Assinniboine features tours beginning at H. Earl Clack Museum – set near the Holiday Village Shopping Center. Assinniboine is also a member of the Old Forts Trail – an official Montana historic trail.

Montana State University Northern

A member of the Montana State University System, Montana State University-Northern is located in Havre, a charming city in the far north of Montana, just east of Shelby. Up until 2007, it was simply known as Northern Montana College. MSU-Northern fields athletic teams like men's and women's basketball, football, golf, and wrestling who compete within the Frontier Conference.

When planning your visit to Montana, make it to the northern region and check out Havre. Plan a campus tour of MSU-Northern with your high school senior and start planning for the next step in higher education. Get and experience the city, too – you'll want to fish a bit at Sands Lake, enjoy a nice spring picnic at Patterson Park or Kuhr Memorial Park.

Nez Perce National Historical Park

Connecting 38 separate sites, the Nez Perce National Historical Park crosses through Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana. The trail preserves the 1877 flight of the Nez Perce from their Oregon homelands to seek peace in Canada and freedom from the pursuing U.S. Army Forces.

See the end of the Nez Perce journey at the Bear's Paw Mountains, located near Havre. The trail includes informative exhibits and preserves important sites like the Bear Paw Battlefield and Canyon Creek. The sites also offer numerous outdoor activities to enjoy the Montana scenery.

Railroad Museum

Located in the former railroad siding of Havre, the Frank DeRosa Railroad Museum sits to preserve the rich railroad heritage in Montana. Weather permitting – the railroad museum is open for business seven days a week in the summer and six days a week in the winter.

During your visit, exhibits on hand include a variety of actual Montana railroad equipment, including a real-life pushcart, a working block signal, and more. Other on-site must sees include the model railroad, gift shop, and reference library for further Montana settler history and railroad information.

Rookery State Recreation Area

Located just outside of Havre in northern Montana, the Rookery State Wildlife Management Area attracts visitors year round due its abundance of outdoor recreation. The area primarily is dedicated to preserving the riparian areas along the nearby Milk River.

Popular activities include fishing, hiking, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. With the proper permits, visitors can hunt beaver, ducks, geese, and more. The area encompasses over 2,200 acres in total, ensuring plenty of beautiful scenery and Montana landscape.

Wahkpa Chugn Archaeological Site

Also known as the Too Close For Comfort Site, the Wahkpa Chugn Archaeological Site is located on 15 acres in northern Montana. Set near Havre, the site is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

A public archaeological park operated by the H. Earl Clack Memorial Museum, the spot preserves a 2,000-year-old Native American buffalo jump site. Visitors may sign up for guided tours, and can check out the 20-foot buffalo bone wall.
