Downtown Billings

What To Do When You're in Billings!

The largest city in Montana and home to Montana State University Billings, Billings is a happening place in Big Sky Country. Also known simply as Magic City, Billings is busting with cultural attractions, historic sites, outdoor activities, and so much more.

Culture Vultures

Whether a Western art fan, or just really into the theater, Billings has your answer.

The first stop for cultural types is the Yellowstone Art Museum – established in 1964 and now housing over 7,400 works. YAM offers continuous collections like the Visible Vault, traveling exhibitions, and onsite events like Jam at the YAM and Art Auction 48.

Performing arts aficionados can visit the Babcock Theatre, Backyard Theatre, Billings Studio Theater, and Sacrifice Cliff Theatre CO. in Billings. See the Billings Symphony Orchestra at the Alberta Bair Theater, or check the event calendar at the NOVA: Performing Arts Center.

Moss Mansion Historic House Museum

History Buffs

This being Montana, it’s not hard to find Old West attractions around every corner. Start with the Western Heritage Center in the 1901 Parmly Billings Memorial Library – itself found on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in the Billings Historic District. A Smithsonian Institution affiliate, the center offers traveling exhibits, guided tours, and a museum store.

Other itinerary toppers for history fans include the impressive Moss Mansion Historic House Museum, the 1882 Billings Depot, and the Boothill Cemetery.

Party Goers

Billings is bustling with events throughout the year. Don’t miss summer events like the Wine & Food Festival at MSU Billings in May, the Strawberry Festival at Skypoint in June, and July’s SummerFair in North Park. Other summer events include Skyfest, MontanaFair, and the Great American Championship Motorcycle Hill Climb.

Holiday festivities include Harvest Fest in October, the Christmas Parade in downtown Billings, and the Festival of Trees and Christmas Stroll in December. Some unique-to-Billing events include the Billings Artwalk and the Magic City Blues Festival.

Don’t miss the weeklong NILE Rodeo at MetraPark Arena in mid-October, and if you’re not traveling then, head for the Montana Pro Rodeo Hall & Wall of Fame.

Take the kids out for a day in ZooMontana, or take a quick day trip to the famed Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument for guided tours and other ranger programs. Other nearby National Park sites include the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, and Pompeys Pillar National Monument.
